Bristol Nordic Walking Symonds Yat Forest of Dean Walk
Sunday 30th June 10am
Meeting Point:
Meet at the café between the car park toilets and Symonds Yat Rock (Symonds Yat Log Rock Café). Car Park is GL16 7NZ

Steve Bees is a Welsh walking expert and International Mountain Leader. He has led numerous wonderful Nordic walks for us in the past and has put together a stunning 7 mile circular loop around Symonds Yat, a superb walking area in the Forest of Dean famed for its natural river scenery and wooded expanses.

This varied walk is packed with spectacular views and you’ll enjoy majestic, undulating countryside as you walk by the River Wye. You’ll walk through magical woodland and walk across Biblins suspension bridge, a bridge built by the Forestry Commission using local oak timbers in 1957. Symonds Yat West is on the Herefordshire side of the river and Symonds Yat East on the Gloucestershire side. Between the two banks are two ancient hand ‘pull’ ferries by which the ferryman pulls people across the river using an overhead rope. You’ll be crossing the river using the ferry so please bring £1.40 for the fee.

Please note you will be crossing a suspension bridge - photo below;

For more than 200 years visitors have come to this area to view its breathtaking landscape. Even Wordsworth and his friends came to the Wye Valley as part of their grand tour (if it’s good enough for Wordsworth it’s good enough for us). And keep your eye out for a plethora of local wildlife including fallow deer, badgers, otters and Peregrines who thrive in the area due to a joint effort by the RSPB & Foresty Commission.

This is a relaxed walk with a couple of short climbs through the woods.  Time has been buit in for a decent stop so please bring snacks/sandwiches with you.

There’s a lovely café for drink and food at the end of your walk where you can enjoy the last spectacular views of the day -

We advise you book early as this walk will be popular.
