The Surrey Hills is an area tightly packed with sweeping hillsides, woods, heathland, views and history. Come and spend a weekend with Vicky in her home village of Albury (with its amazing chimneys) and explore this area with her. The walking is excellent and there are some really beautiful wooded avenues. She has also organised Saturday lunch in one of her favourite pubs; a tour of an award winning gin distillery; a visit to a much loved and photographed National Garden Scheme garden and an optional extra tour of the nearby town of Guildford. Here’s some more detail:
Friday 10th May: afternoon (£18 optional extra)
Albury is a short drive from Guildford town, with its attractive cobbled high street, iconic Guildhall clock, ruined castle, and good restaurants. If you have the time and inclination, join Vicky for lunch at the delightful Shardana, a family run Italian restaurant in the heart of the town followed by a specially organised private guided tour of Guildford itself by one of the town’s guides. This 90 minute tour is an excellent way to learn a little about the history of the area and will set the scene for our walking weekend.
Friday 10th May: evening
We’ll all converge on the Drummond Arms, Albury in time for a 7.30pm evening meal. The Drummond is a popular local pub with comfortable rooms and a reputation for good food. It is in the centre of Albury village and has a very welcoming bar area and pretty pub garden with the Tillingbourne stream babbling along at the bottom. It’s a lovely place to sit and have a drink if the weather is good and a great base for our walking weekend. You can check into your room any time from 3pm.
Saturday 11th May: 10/12 mile walk plus Silent Pool gin distillery tour
9.00am start - Boots on, poles out and cameras at the ready for a 10-12 mile walk, a pub lunch stop, and a 90 minute tour of the Silent Pool gin distillery.
Today we will be taking in Newlands Corner itself, the majestic Albury Park where the picture postcard ancient Saxon church of St Peter and St Paul is nestled (it’s been in several films including Four Weddings and a Funeral), Shere village, the Catholic Apostolic story, and much more. It’ll be a full morning’s walking, lunch at 12 noon, a further hour’s walking; arriving at the Silent Pool for a 2pm gin tour and tasting. There’s still a further 1 mile back to the Drummond afterwards so steady on the tasting…
4pm (approx) finish
7.30pm 3 course dinner
Sunday 12th May: 12 mile walk plus Vale End garden visit
9.30am start – We’re heading towards Guildford today, picking up the ancient Pilgrims way and climbing St Martha’s Hill for some far reaching views. Mill ponds, riverside tracks, and the gunpowder mill ruins will be on the agenda plus one of Vicky’s favourite beach woods which has a fabulous bluebell display in the Spring (they may still be out). We will have a picnic lunch near Losely House, which is about half way round this circular walk and finish at Vale End, a pretty walled garden which has opened for over three decades for the National Garden Scheme. The owners, John and Daphne Foulsham are known for their hospitality and we will be able to enjoy home made cakes and tea/coffee as well as their garden. We should be back at the Drummond by 4pm to collect cars and drive back to Bristol.
