Bristol Nordic Walking Mendips Loop Walk
Sunday 14th April 10am
Meeting Point:

This magnificent 13 mile circular walk takes in the very best of the Mendip hills just to the south of Bristol.  We'll see spectacular sights across North Somerset and interesting points along the way, starting with the Iron Age fort at Dolebury Warren which was built 3000 years ago. We'll then stop at Beacon Batch, the highest point on the Mendips which is the site of bronze age round barrows, one of which also anchors the concrete trig point.

From here we'll walk through Long Wood, considered to be one of the best woods in the Cheddar Gorge complex of woods thanks to its displays of spring flowers, fantastic wildlife and beautiful views, and then Velvet Botton, which aptly describes the green and 'rabbity' soft lush grass which carpets the gentle banks and meadows along the path.

Our route will skirt past the impressive prominent outcrock of Black Rock and if you are a 'twitcher' you may be able to see many of the resident woodland birds - woodpeckers, jays, marsh tits, nuthatches, treecreepers and redpolls. Overhead buzzards, kestrels and ravens are regular, and there is a good chance of a peregrine too – the local jackdaws may alert you to their presence.

Then we'll climb to the upper section of Cheddar Gorge, one of Britain's most spectacular natural landmarks and our largest gorge.  Weather permitting you will enjoy many far-reaching views, wildflowers and maybe even grazing goats. As we go we will take in sections of the Limstone Link, a long-distance footpath from the Mendip Hills Gloucestershire, and the Mendips Way, a dramatic ridge route cutting west to east over the Mendip Hills designated an ‘Area of outstanding Natural Beauty’ that bridges the full variety of the rich landscape of Somerset. trails.

It should be a fabulous days walking and a great opportunity to prepare for the Bath Beat walking challenge.
