Would you like to explore beautiful, unforgettable Dartmoor?
In 2018 we will be holding another hugely popular Nordic walking short break in Dartmoor with our fantastic guide Elaine Sylvester from Love Dartmoor.
This September weekend is open to all - members, non-members and beginner Nordic walkers.
Our previous stays at the quirky and welcoming Two Bridges Hotel have been a great experience so we will be staying again this year. The hotel is perched on the banks of the beautiful West Dart River with jaw-dropping countryside and historic surroundings. So after an enjoyable days walking we can look forward to comfortable hotel rooms, delicious food and meeting up in the bustling bar for a coffee (or something stronger maybe..).
Here's what we'll do..
Friday 21st Sept
We can arrive at the Two Bridges anytime after 2pm. If you come down early you could also explore the beautiful market town of Tavistock 15 minutes away. You'll need to come by your own transport and we can organise lift shares nearer the time. The first time we will get together will be for a drink at the hotel bar where you’ll meet your fellow Nordic walkers.
Time for dinner and a chat about our planned routes for Saturday and Sunday. We’ll be choosing from a delicious three course set menu and then it's off to bed to enjoy a good nights sleep before our upcoming adventure.
Elaine does not set the routes until nearer the time as she'll choose the best route for the weather conditions, but whatever the weather you can expect to see stunning scenery, moor animals and cover a multitude of terrains - bogs, tussocks, clitter, streams and stepping stones. We'll also climb tors to get the best views and descend into gurts and gullies to explore the best that Dartmoor has to offer.
Saturday 22nd Sept: distance 9-10 miles
Walk starts 9.30 am
As we leave at 9.30am both days you'll have plenty of time to enjoy the locally sourced, hearty breakfast to set you up for the day. You can expect to walk around 9 - 10 miles on day one (weather dependent) which doesn't seem far, however you will still need an adequate level of fitness as Nordic walking on Dartmoor is more challenging. (It's important to do some training beforehand if you feel your fitness is not up to scratch - talk to Ros or Rachael if you're unsure.) Elaine always finds a great spot for our packed lunch, so you'll have your sandwich with a view.
When we return from our Saturday walk we'll have a couple of hours to ourselves before another tasty 3 course meal. The rest of the night is yours - stay up to enjoy a tipple from the bar or feel free to retire early for a well earned sleep. Please note that drinks are not included in the price.
Sunday 23rd Sept: distance 7-8 miles
Walk starts 9.30am
After another home cooked Devon breakfast we’ll be off. This is another opportunity to improve your fitness and develop your skills in Nordic walking, whilst marvelling at the diverse, exciting and magical Dartmoor terrain.
3.30–4.30pm Return to hotel
We'll return on Sunday a little earlier so you'll get back to Bristol in good time, unless you want to stick around for a famous Two Bridges cream tea - the home made scones are heavenly.
Jan said of our last trip in September "The walks were amazing and Elaine really knows Dartmoor and loves it!".
Duncan said "Ros ,most enjoyable weekend. Good company. Well paced walks with an interesting guide. The hotel and food was top notch. Only fly in the ointment was that someone whose name began with R and ended in achael Williams kept nicking my sweets!"
Rachael will be leading the weekend again this year.
