Clevedon is a pretty Victorian seaside resort on the River Severn. Fishing from the pier, sailing from the beach, swimming in the saltwater tidal pool and eating in one of the many excellent cafes on the sea front are just some of the attractions that entice people to travel the short distance from Bristol. For us walkers there are also magnificent walks and views.
One of the best is the Clevedon scenic circular, which is being led by Liz Carver. This 6 mile walk starts at Clevedon pier and heads along the coast path before turning inland over the golf course, passing nearby Walton Castle. The route then dips down to St Paul's church at Walton-in-Gordano (which rather delightfully leaves packs for walkers and even dog biscuits) and crosses the moor alongside Clapton Moor Nature reserve. A climb to join the Gordano Round path through Clevedon Court estate follows before the path turns back towards Clevedon. The last climb is up Strawberry hill with great views over the bay and then it's down the zigzag back to the pier.
The walk is reasonably challenging with at least one steep climb, but of course the climbs are rewarded with wonderful views of the estuary, the Gordano valley and Clevedon bay. Tiffin does a good lunch for those that are interested after all that exertion!
