The recognisable flowers of the bluebell carpet our woodlands in an enchanting sweep of purple every year - a nature spectacle not to be missed. Bluebells spend most of the year underground in a dormant state only emerging to leaf and flower in the spring, growing from bulbs. They mainly spread by seed very rapidly, but their bulbs can split to form clones. The bluebell is protected in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981.
Priors Wood was once part of the Tyntesfield estate and is a wonderful woodland with meandering paths and steep hillsides that look glorious in spring, especially when smothered in bluebells. In fact the display here is one of the most spectacular in our region. Oak, hazel and small leaved lime trees make a fairly dense canopy, so at times it feels like a magical secret garden. We will be walking this route when the bluebells are at their absolute finest, a spectacle not to be missed.
Lorna will take you on a stunning 3.5 mile circular loop through this ancient woodland, streams and plantations which will take around one and a half hours.
