This circular walk is a stretching 10 miles and is the perfect training walk for those of you doing our Bath Beat challenge or wanting to test yourself over a longer distance. The walk starts in Ashton Court with it's 840 acres of stunning woodland and open countryside with some of the best views in Bristol. There are steep grassy slopes, plantations of native and ornamental trees and a deer park.
We'll then go through Abbots Pool which is the central feature of the surrounding woodland. This large pool was part of a series of pools used by medieval monks developed for the medieval practice of farming for fish. Surrounding the pool is idyllic mature woodland containing some impressive oak and beech trees. An abundance of wildlife can be found here and most of the area has been designated as a Local Nature Reserve.
From there we head uphill to Lower Failand with its rolling countryside, small fields and woodlands divided by hedges and sunken lanes, before heading back via the tow path and Leigh Woods. It's a great opportunity to see some of our most beautiful walking areas around Bristol and how they link up with each other. We have allocated 5 hours as we will be stopping for short breaks along the way. Please bring some snacks and water to keep you going.
